Olusegun Obasanjo has gone dowm memory lane and recounted his prison experience.
Former president of Nigeria Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has gone dowm memory lane and recounted his prison experience, The Cable reports.
In 1995 Obasanjo was sentenced to life imprisonment for his alleged involvement in the plot to overthrow that government. However, he was released three years later, following the death of Sani Abacha.
Speaking at the 50th anniversary and founder’s day lecture of the Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) in Lagos, Obasanjo said that if a person believes in God, he would be able to succeed and achieve his goals in life.
“When I was in prison, I was always bubbling with joy, because I derive joy in the presence of God. This shows that you can be happy in spite of your situation.
“So, rather than seek happiness, seek God and every other thing will fall into place. Man has been in search of happiness through position, reputation, greatness, wealth and even through atrocities.
“All these can only produce man-made happiness that cannot last. Man lacks the ability to make himself happy and in the quest for happiness, we look in the wrong direction and places,” he said.
The former president praised the BSN for making it possible for Nigerians to have better understanding of the word of God through the many local languages that the society had interpreted the Bible into.
Also speaking, Yakubu Gowon, a former head of state and patron of the BSN, commended the society for evangelising and promoting the word of God.
“It has been 50-years of noble existence and development. It also means that more is expected in the service of Christ; don’t get tired,” he said.
Gowon called on political leaders to put God first in all their dealings for the good of the country and urged religious groups to promote peace in the nation.
Ernest Shonekan, a former Interim president of Nigeria, was also present at the event. In his speech, he commended the BSN for propagating the word of God and encouraging more followers to lead good Christian life.
Shonekan called on citizens to emulate Christ by showing love to their fellow man.
Earlier this week, Obasanjo was a special guest at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun state.
Speaking during the institution’s interactive programme,
“The instruments we are using today (to fight corruption) were all fashioned out by me when I was in office. We did not have anything like the instruments (ICPC, EFCC) before. Not only did I bring up these instruments, I also looked for the right people who could make the instruments work,” he said.
