The people of Imo state were excited earlier on
Wednesday, February 10, following the reinstatement of some workers who
were suspended by the Rochas-led government.
It can be recalled that over 3000 civil servants were presumed sacked, however, Governor Rochas Okorocha informed that the workers were suspended and not sacked.
Reports suggest that the Imo state government have bowed to pressure
from the organized labour as it announced the recall of workers earlier
suspended in 19 parastatals, departments and agencies.
Governor Rochas announced the recall of the workers on Wednesday in
the heat of a protest by members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
Daily Post reports that all activities at the Sam Mbakwe Airport,
Owerri and other government offices under the NLC were shutdown to
effect the compliance of the protest.
It will be recalled that the NLC had threatened that there will be a total shutdown within the state, if the workers were not recalled.
A 14-day ultimatum was issued to the state government to recall the
sacked workers and tackle their unpaid salaries and other benefits.
The Imo state government urged the NLC not to embark on any strike, stressing that such action will be of no benefit to any one.
NLC members from the 36 states of the federation led by the National
President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba on Wednesday converged in Owerri, the
state capital, to hold a protest against the concession policy of the
state government and force the state to reverse the suspension of the
affected workers.
The state government and the state executive of the NLC met at the
office of the secretary to the Imo state government, and it was agreed
that the suspension of the workers would be reversed.
